The chief executive of the Darlington NHS trust, which was forced to pay £187,000 compensation to nurses who complained about trans women in female changing rooms, has expressed his regret over how the hospital handled the issue. He emphasised that, since the judgment, the trust had updated its policies and arrangements so that people now used changing facilities reflecting their biological sex. “Although the policy and practice are that people use single-sex areas according to biological sex, we need to improve changing facilities across the trust. The facilities are not as good as they should be, but single sex means biological sex,” Russell told the local newspaper. Six London councils have also openly committed not to adhere to the code’s biological sex guidance.
