UK cement giant Breedon Group has warned production has sunk to the lowest level since 1950 due to high energy costs and “uneven” emissions regulation. Pointing to the 4,000 jobs it supports across 350 sites, Breedon said imports “now account for more than a third of UK cement sales”. Relaunching Breedon’s campaing, chief executive Rob Wood said: “Our Back British cement campaign advocates for a level playing field for the domestic cement industry, including effective carbon border measures, to support UK construction, economic growth and national resilience. In its statement, Breedon said it has been engaging with Government but it called for “further clarification and progress”. “Procuring more British cement for government backed projects, whether infrastructure or housing, rather than imports, can also make a significant difference to job security and supporting communities across the country.”
