As voting is underway in Florida, Bonita Springs voters in particular hold the Bonita Estero Rail Trail project in their hands, which could affect Floridians far and wide with plans for state connectivity. “I think it’s a great thing because no one is using the railroad,” said Bonita Springs resident Raul Rubio as he worked outside the artist cottage along the river outside Riverside Park in Bonita Springs on Sunday, Aug. 9, just ahead of voting. Collier County has already approved their smaller segment, as has the Village of Estero—leaving the connectivity in the hands of the Bonita voters who are geographically in the middle. Naples Pathway Coalition leaders are among the advocates for the project and are vying for Bonita Springs voters to approve it. The plan for the trail corridor within Collier County includes three segments: the 75.2-mile Paradise Coast Trail (PCT), the 18.6-mile Marco Island Loop Trail, and 42.4 miles of trail along State Road (S.R.)
