Bonita voters to decide fate of Bonita Estero Rail Trail during August referendum to convert old track for regional connectivityThe path forward for the Bonita Estero Rail Trail (BERT) may soon be decided at the ballot box.
Bonita Springs’ portion of the acquisition is approximately $28.6 million, Estero’s is $19.8 million and Collier County’s is $11.6 million.
Bonita Springs City Council believed it was important for the voters to decide and voted to put forward the referendum,” said Deborah Orton, Friends of BERT president.
“BERT is so much more than a bike path or a walking trail — BERT is a safety and quality-of-life project,” Orton said.
For Bonita Springs, he said, BERT could similarly contribute to pedestrian safety, recreation, quality of life and the city’s ability to retain future generations.
