After discussion and public comment, the DeLand City Commission agreed on two top choices for the location of the Old Jail in DeLand: Either renovate the space into a town square — a city event spot with food trucks and green space for families — or sell the property as-is.
Tom Homan, owner of Modern Elegance on Georgia Avenue, advocated for a town square during public comment.
During City Commission discussion, Commissioners Dan Reed and Kevin Reid were both in favor of the town square.
City Commissioner Richard Paiva also expressed interest, pointing out the area could be leased for events.
“I’ve long maintained that I’d rather not be spending hundreds of thousands of city dollars on the site,” Cloudman said.
