Since the 1970s, however, artists such as Faith Ringgold have expanded the possibilities of the medium, using quilts as works of fine art that tell stories, offer political commentary, and explore social issues. Today, art quilts have earned increasing recognition in museums and galleries around the world as a vibrant contemporary art form. This evolution is on full display in “Bobbi Baugh: Symbols & Storytelling” at the Museum of Art – DeLand. Baugh embraces the traditions of quilting while expanding them into art quilts that tell stories, challenge assumptions, and invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences. She values the community that has grown around the medium, meeting regularly with a local surface-design and mixed-media group, while remaining an active member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), an international organization of more than 4,000 artists, curators, collectors and arts professionals dedicated to promoting art quilts.
