A vintage ATV Today news report from July 20, 1976, warned that the prolonged hot and dry weather could have consequences that would stretch well beyond the summer, with fears of vegetable shortages and higher prices during the winter. Reporter Margaret Hounsell visited the Pershore Growers Co-operative to speak to its General Manager, Tim Perry, about the increasingly desperate conditions facing vegetable growers. While the sunshine may have been welcomed by holidaymakers, for farmers and growers the continuing absence of rain was becoming a major problem. The ATV report captured the agricultural concerns of the time as growers watched the weather forecast and waited for the rain that their crops desperately needed. The summer of 1976 would go on to become one of Britain’s most famous heatwaves, with a prolonged drought affecting much of the country.
