Australia’s 2026 Census will be conducted this week on Tuesday 11 August and it includes a question on sexual orientation for the first time. Census questions tend to produce lower figures than other surveys on sexuality questions, which may be because the forms may be completed by the ‘head of the household’ who may either not know or not approve of the orientation of the other people in the property. It can also be a matter of individual choice not to accurately report the answer to that question. But still it provides a baseline figure on bisexuality in the wider population that may help with providing the evidence of need for healthcare, anti-discrimination work and other societal provision.
