Five months later, innovative home design proves it can be doneThe last time the Acorn visited Leo Paulo’s rebuilding project on Santa Cruz Way in March, there wasn’t a roof overhead. When the Acorn first visited the site in the spring, Paulo had become one of the first homeowners in Ventura County rebuilding with a structural concrete insulated panel system rather than traditional wood framing. The concrete system also eliminates the need for traditional wall and attic insulation, while the home’s thick concrete shell helps regulate indoor temperatures. While a handful of rebuilding projects have begun—including Paulo’s and another nearby home using the same panel system—many lots remain vacant as homeowners continue working through insurance settlements, engineering requirements and the high cost of rebuilding. Instead, he hopes to invite the friends and neighbors who helped him through the rebuilding process to thank them personally.
