Thermal generation jumps as Yukon power demand continues to climb

The Yukon’s latest energy facts report shows the territory leaning more on backup power as demand keeps climbing, according to new figures released July 31 by the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
That’s nearly double the solar output recorded five years earlier in the Yukon Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 report.
Non‑residential users accounted for most of that growth, according to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
Electricity‑based heating has steadily increased, reaching 5,095 homes last year, according to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
Mining alone made up 88 per cent of industrial energy demand in 2024, according to the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
