An education and awareness programme aims to train more than 100,000 people in Portugal’s Lisbon and Braga areas by 2029 to respond to heatwaves and fires, organisers have announced. The programme will raise public awareness and knowledge about the risks, facilitate access to training, preparedness tools, simulation exercises and local solutions, including first-aid techniques. It also includes family emergency plans and strengthened coordination between local early warning systems, communities and municipal civil protection services. The insurer states that in Portugal, heatwaves were responsible for around 2,200 deaths in 2022, and that the economic impact of extreme weather events has exceeded €13.4 billion since 1980. Curiously, however, this year’s heatwaves have not (yet) been on the scale suffered by other countries in Europe, including the United Kingdom.
