The YWCA NWT gathered insight directly from the community and published a report in 2020 that called for the inclusion of stalking as a form of violence under the Protection Against Family Violence Act. (NNSL file photo)The Government of the Northwest Territories recently added stalking as a form of violence to the Protection Against Family Violence Act, among other amendments. “These measures help to ensure safe communities for Northerners, by improving safety, supporting victims and strengthening the response to family violence across the Northwest Territories.” The changes are based on feedback from the YWCA NWT, which gathered insight directly from clients and community partners. The legislation was established in 2005 to provide emergency and long-term support for those experiencing family violence across the NWT.
