From the earliest days of the Republic, the nation has steadily expanded access to the ballot while continually searching for ways to safeguard public confidence in the outcome. Today, however, some citizens believe stricter, more limiting electoral rules are necessary to strengthen election integrity and restore confidence in the process. In short, making voting more convenient for eligible citizens does not have to come at the expense of election security. In fact, modern election systems can provide both strong safeguards and broad access to the ballot. That trust depends not only on accurate vote counting but also on broad public participation, transparent procedures, and confidence that every eligible voter has a reasonable opportunity to cast a ballot.
