Richard Samuel Roberts became one of South Carolina’s most famous photographers in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of Roberts’s portraits have been collected and published in the book “A True Likeness: The Black South of Richard Samuel Roberts: 1920-1936.” While clarifying that she is not a historian, Abby shares the Richard Samuel Roberts story—he moved his family to Columbia in 1920. Abby’s role in this, to publicize the digital collection through social media, written stories, and events has helped to inform Columbia’s citizens of Richard Samuel Roberts’s work. This was a thriving community during Richard Samuel Robert’s time there.
