The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which sets vehicle safety standards, announced it has granted Zoox a temporary exemption. Zoox plans to kick off its paid robotaxi service in Las Vegas. Securing that approval and the ability to charge for rides puts Zoox in uncharted territory. The company has tested its vehicles in Las Vegas and San Francisco for several years, but until now, it couldn’t charge fares. A launch in Las Vegas might lead to expansion into other cities.
