"We decided to do something that I think I hear no country has ever done, that we got into bilateral engagement with China.
President William Ruto consults with Treasury CS John Mbadi during an event at State House, Nairobi, on June 30, 2026.
Every year, we are saving USD 215 million on the SGR loans, the three of them that we took," he added.
In March 2025, he said, Kenya paid Ksh74 billion (USD579 million) towards a USD900 million debt obligation that was due in May 2027.
The Treasury CS said the debt management measures had helped ease pressure on the country's financial position, including lowering yields on Kenya's debt.
