Bexar County commissioners approved a series of changes to improve medical care and oversight at the county jail following months of scrutiny over inmate deaths. The funding also directs county staff to develop a public-facing dashboard tracking jail deaths, inmate population data, medical referrals and other performance measures. Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai has said the county is pursuing both immediate jail reforms and longer-term diversion efforts aimed at improving public safety and inmate care. If accepted, they would be transported directly to the diversion center rather than the county jail. At the same time, UTHealth Houston is conducting a feasibility study using Bexar County jail data to determine how many diversion beds the community ultimately needs.
