India and Afghanistan could potentially be connected by a direct road route through the region of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor. India maintains that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir, including PoK, is an integral part of the country. The area where India’s claimed territory meets Afghanistan lies around Gilgit-Baltistan, close to the Wakhan Corridor. AdvertisementIf this territory were ever brought under Indian control, one possible road route could connect Manali or Srinagar with Kabul through Ladakh, Kargil, Gilgit-Baltistan and the Wakhan Corridor. The Wakhan Corridor is among the world’s most remote and mountainous regions, with elevations ranging from around 3,000 to 6,000 metres in parts.
