MKO ABIOLA’S WIDOW, PROF. AKASOBA DUKE-ABIOLA, ACCEPTS NOMINATION FOR UN SECRETARY-GENERALNigeria’s Prof. Akasoba Duke-Abiola, widow of the late democracy icon Chief MKO Abiola, has accepted her nomination for the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations. Duke-Abiola, a law professor and diplomat with a recent doctorate in Sustainable Development focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), described the nomination as “a solemn call to serve”, particularly vulnerable communities, women and children. The development has sparked attention in Nigeria, coming from the widow of MKO Abiola, whose struggle for democracy remains one of the defining chapters in Nigeria’s political history. If successful, Duke-Abiola would become the first Nigerian and one of the few Africans to occupy the UN’s highest executive diplomatic office. From MKO Abiola’s democratic struggle to a potential bid for the world’s top diplomatic office, the Abiola legacy is once again in the spotlight.
