Mason Jennings has spent nearly three decades chasing something that cannot be hunted down, only welcomed. “I couldn’t believe I wrote all these songs,” Jennings says. Born in Hawaii, Jennings spent his earliest years there before moving with his family to Pittsburgh, where he remained until he was 19. The Minneapolis music scene of the 1990s offered a rare kind of education. Jennings spent nights at First Avenue, the legendary club immortalized in Purple Rain, watching bands, absorbing performances, and learning what a live room could mean.
