The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joins the global community in observing the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2026, and recognising the enduring legacy, resilience and invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples to our Region and the world. This year’s United Nations theme “Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being”, highlights the vital role of indigenous knowledge systems in nurturing healthy communities and preserving cultural identity across generations. The recently relaunched CARICOM Ten-Point Plan for Reparatory Justice: A Manifesto for the Coming Enlightenment, reinforces the call for an Indigenous Peoples Development Programme, to ensure thriving indigenous communities in the Region with increased opportunities for social and economic development. Addressing these issues will require meaningful dialogue and policies that respect the rights, dignity and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples. Happy International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples!
