Yet another Mississippi HBCU is bringing in a former NBA player to be the general manager of its men’s basketball program. After Jackson State made waves in June with the hiring of 14-year professional big man Kendrick Perkins, Alcorn State announced Aug. 7 that former NBA guard Monta Ellis will be its general manager, effective immediately. Alcorn State has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2002. The general manager position will be Ellis’ first official basketball staff role since his NBA career ended in 2017. “Today marks the beginning of an incredible new chapter, and I’m truly honored and excited to be named the general manager for men’s basketball at Alcorn State University,” Ellis said.
