June Haynes & Jerry Swartz, cofounders of JJUIN, offer insights on how they transformed a rustic outdoor shed into a working studio where Jerry could work on his sculpture behind their East Hampton shop. When we first set our sights on opening JJUIN in East Hampton, our intention was to create a destination experience that reflected both our shared and individual passions. The first step to take when transforming a shed is to ensure the result aligns with the property’s main structure. Instead of a utilitarian light fixture, we selected a bright, black metal chandelier that instantly elevated the shed but maintained balance with the rustic atmosphere. Here, we used a curved, L-shaped work desk at the far corner of the shed, which was both practical and inviting.
