(Jay Compton/Claiborne Progress)Just over 7500 voters cast ballots in Thursday’s Claiborne County general election and state primary. The voters chose to re-elect the late Joe Brooks as county mayor leading to a special election in November to fill the vacancy. Voters also chose nine newcomers for the Claiborne County Commission along with 12 incumbents. Mike Campbell, chairman of the county commission, is currently serving as interim mayor. Under state law the new county commission must declare the seat vacant on September 1 and appoint an interim mayor to serve until the next general election.
