Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has told the Labor caucus that he anticipates the government’s gambling bill will pass with support from the Coalition, after he met with Opposition Leader Angus Taylor today. “I’m confident that later in the week we’ll have the legislation in the House of Representatives with some really practical amendments dealing with the targeting of advertising, dealing with reducing children’s exposure, and dealing with as well the full suite of measures in a really practical way.” Before today, the gambling crackdown was at risk of being blocked by the Greens and the Coalition. Opposition communications spokeswoman Sarah Henderson last week said the draft bill was “riddled with deficiencies”. Albanese has tried to land a compromise, which falls short of the full advertising ban supported by a vocal minority of Labor backbenchers, as well as a religious and civil society groups.
