There is little hope of increased public spending when the government remains utterly committed to huge hikes in military spending. Lucy Powell, the new education secretary, has blamed former Tory education secretary Michael Gove for widespread youth unemployment. Powell will find, as education secretary, that she can make very little difference to youth unemployment. Graham and Smith argue that higher military spending is necessary for jobs, but that argument is spurious. Research has demonstrated that redirecting money to military spending will create fewer jobs in the arms industry than are lost in other areas.
