The protest has been organised amid growing concerns within the farming community about the circumstances surrounding the operation by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ (DAERA) Humane Slaughter Team. Fermanagh and South Tyrone Ulster Unionist MLA Diana Armstrong has urged farmers and members of the wider community to attend the peaceful demonstration, which is due to take place at Stormont at 10am. DAERA has confirmed that a review is being carried out into the circumstances surrounding the operation. She said the case had “shaken confidence” across Northern Ireland’s farming community and raised questions around departmental decision-making, veterinary oversight and the use of DAERA’s powers. The planned Stormont protest is expected to bring farmers and supporters together to call for answers over the Fivemiletown operation.
