In 1872, the Education (Scotland) Act would revolutionise education provision across the country.
The Education (Scotland) Act 1918 required education authorities to make “adequate provision for teaching Gaelic in Gaelic-speaking areas”.
The 1970s and 1980s were turning points for Gaelic in formal education, with the introduction of bilingual education projects in selected Highlands and Islands’ schools.
In 2005, the Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act established Bòrd na Gàidhlig as a public body with responsibility for promoting Gaelic development, and in 2025 the Scottish Languages Act gave both the Gaelic and Scots languages official status for the first time, providing a boost for Gaelic education provision.
