The bear, which was rescued by Burmese monks as a cub, suffered from a rare tongue deformation. Rescued by Buddhist monks after escaping traffickers, Nyan htoo, aged 2, had an excessively large tongue, likely due to an infection caused by a parasite. The animal had previously undergone surgery in 2016 to try to remove the excess mucous membrane. Despite this, the tongue continued to swell, eventually making life unbearable for the young bear.
