Victoria has recorded 47 positive cases of H5 bird flu in wild birds, with recent detections at Yambuk, Apollo Bay and Clyde, alongside known cases around Portland and Nelson.
The housing requirement is intended to reduce the risk of transmission between wild birds and poultry while the situation continues to develop.
“We’re acting early to protect Victoria’s poultry industry and help keep eggs and poultry affordable and available,” said minister for agriculture Michaela Settle.
Free range egg farmers who move their hens indoors to protect them from H5 bird flu can continue to label and sell their eggs as free range.
