['Brian Harmon']
Greater Long Island
A retired NYPD chief who once led the department’s organized crime unit drowned in his backyard pool in Stony Brook Friday evening, police said.
Officers and Stony Brook Fire Department members pulled Izzo from the water and performed CPR at the scene before rushing him to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Izzo spent decades with the NYPD, rising to chief of the Organized Crime Control Bureau.
In 2006, he was promoted to command the 2,100 detectives assigned to the NYPD’s Organized Crime Control Bureau.
The 911 call came in just as thunderstorms and heavy winds rolled across the Stony Brook area Friday evening.
