José Figueroa formally issued regulations ordering the secularization of the California mission system, a decision that would dramatically reshape life throughout Alta California, including what would later become the Santa Clarita Valley.
Figueroa was tasked with carrying out the transition and signed the “Provisional Regulations for the Secularization of the Missions of Alta California” on Aug. 9, 1834.
