Nagasaki: ‘Necessary’ or War Crime?

Nagasaki Day arrived again today, marking the atomic bombing of that Japanese city 81 years ago.
And then I recount my morning in Nagasaki on this date back in 1984.
In truth, the man behind the Nagasaki bomb was not Truman, but Gen. Leslie R. Groves, director of the Manhattan Project.
“This is the one school in the entire world most touched by the atomic bomb,” he pointed out, “so you must say, no more nuclear weapons.”
He has written widely about the atomic bomb and atomic bombings, and their aftermath, for over forty years.
