Every Ford Fathom will be BlueCruise Capable for hands-free highway driving. The truck will offer bidirectional power capability, allowing it to send electricity back to a home or to another electric vehicle rather than only receiving a charge. Upstart automaker Slate has already announced pricing for its own stripped-down electric pickup at roughly $3,500 less than the Fathom’s starting price, setting up a direct comparison between the two trucks once both reach production. The Fathom becomes Ford’s second all-electric pickup after the F-150 Lightning, and its arrival extends the automaker’s electric lineup beyond the Mustang Mach-E crossover. Ford has said lessons learned from both of those earlier programs, including a mismatch between projected and actual customer demand, informed the more cost-disciplined approach behind the Universal Electric Vehicle platform and the Fathom itself.
