A Sensual Cesspool of Iniquity: James Bacon Explores Ireland’s Banned Comics
['Mike Glyer']
File 770
Journey Planet editor and comics historian James Bacon presented his research on Ireland’s forgotten comics censorship campaign at the National Library of Ireland on August 6, drawing on years of archival research that became the basis for his recent book, A Sensual Cesspool of Iniquity: Comics and Censorship in 1950s Ireland.
Version 1.0.0While the 1950s anti-comics moral panic is well known to fans of American comics, James argues that Ireland’s experience was unique.
James’ research uncovers government files, press reports, and even surviving copies of banned comics, examining titles ranging from Eagle and Superman to Crime SuspenStories and Detective Comics.
James’ research for his book Irish Conflict in Comics (2025), has helped him prepare for this presentation.
The book is available from Limit Break Comics in the Dealers room on the Liffey floor as well as on the Limit Break website: Irish Conflict in Comics: Rebellion, Nazi Spies and the Troubles – Limit Break Comics.
