Police say an 80-year-old woman died as a result of the wildfire that has forced the evacuation of thousands in British Columbia’s Okanagan region. RCMP say they are working to confirm a report that one person died in the fire west of Summerland, while the B.C. The Bald Range wildfire, that has forced 20,000 people out of their homes in the south Okanagan region, burns in Summerland, B.C., late Saturday, August 8, 2026. The BC Wildfire Service said the fire started Friday afternoon, but Krauter said he saw smoke earlier in the day from his home that overlooks the valley. Cliff Chapman, the director of wildfire operations with the BC Wildfire Service, said in a briefing Saturday that the fire was a “nightmare” and one of the most challenging the service had ever faced.
