Road Safety at Work says intense heat, smoke, debris and rapidly changing conditions can make driving near wildfires particularly dangerous.
“If you don’t need to drive through wildfire conditions, don’t,” said Trace Acres, program director for Road Safety at Work.
Road closures, evacuation orders and shifting fire conditions can quickly turn an otherwise routine drive into a dangerous situation.
WorkSafeBC says employers should monitor wildfire and smoke conditions and be prepared to change schedules or postpone travel when conditions become unsafe.
Road Safety at Work is also reminding motorists to stay clear of emergency response routes, where unnecessary traffic can delay crews trying to reach active fires.
