On Aug. 6 firefighters responded to a garbage truck fire in Richfield. According to a post to the Richfield Fire Department Facebook page, the cause of the fire was lithium batteries thrown in household trash. The post called this a careless act that puts sanitation workers and firefighters in danger because these batteries start fires and produce poisonous gas when in thermal run-away. It was also shared that “lithium batteries can be discarded at designated drop off locations. According to batterynetwork.org the only one in Richfield is the Home Depot.”
