In the early medieval period, East Lothian sat at a cultural crossroads. Tantallon Castle, the dramatic cliff-top stronghold of the Douglas Earls of Angus, remains one of Scotland’s most imposing medieval fortresses. Visitors can explore ruined fortresses, walk ancient ramparts or simply absorb the layered history that shapes this distinctive corner of Scotland. From prehistoric dwellings to the Saltire itself, East Lothian’s past remains vividly present in its landscapes and communities.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​This heritage is something we should all be proud of.
