USA: Researchers have discovered in a new study that stool metabolomic profiling in patients with Crohn's disease identified distinct metabolic patterns linked to disease complications. Ileal and ileocolonic disease also demonstrated increased primary bile acids compared with colonic disease, suggesting stool metabolites may help predict disease behavior and severity. Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory disorder that can affect different parts of the gastrointestinal tract and present with varying clinical patterns, including inflammatory, stricturing, and penetrating disease. Patients with complicated disease forms, including stricturing and penetrating Crohn’s disease, showed higher levels of acylcarnitines and secondary bile acids compared with those having inflammatory disease.
