In displacement contexts particularly, trust-based philanthropy could help change this—but only if it is honest about what the goal actually is. As an approach, trust-based philanthropy is meant to be reciprocal. This is a trust-based veneer and true trust-based philanthropy must go further. Yet all too often these intentions sit in direct contradiction with the agency trust-based giving claims to defend. Until this agency becomes the explicit, non-negotiable goal of every funding relationship, trust-based philanthropy will not be trusted to shift power.
