HYDERABAD: An anthem to save the dwindling population of lions marked World Lion Day, celebrated globally on August 10. At Nehru Zoological Park, Hyderabad, the occasion was observed on Sunday with talks by animal keepers highlighting the rapid decline of wild lion populations, the threats they face and the need for conservation of their natural habitats. The concept of safari was introduced at Nehru Zoological Park in 1974, when the first lion safari park was started. Speaking on the occasion, J. Muralidhar, Deputy Curator of Nehru Zoological Park, said the zoo was at the forefront of wildlife education and outreach programmes on every eco‑day. He thanked participants for actively taking part in the World Lion Day celebration and making it a successful educational programme.
