Has guitar music ever found another sitar? Yet, amongst the confusion, one thing caught a stoned and distracted George Harrison’s attention: the strange, unfamiliar sound of the sitar in a restaurant setting. He later mentioned his interest to The Byrds’ frontman, Roger McGuinn, at a party held at Zsá Zsá Gabor’s Bel Air mansion, who subsequently suggested he listen to the work of renowned Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. While The Beatles’ fascination would eventually lead them to India in 1968, they were actually not the first Western rock musicians to experiment with the sitar. The appeal was obvious from the start; the sitar arrived at a moment when guitar music was beginning to look beyond its own boundaries, wherein the blues structures and three-chord simplicity that had defined early rock were giving way to experimentation, with musicians exploring different approaches to composition.
