New York gave us punk, and Britain gave back gobbing, that is, the mutual act of spitting on one another.
Whether that was the band members spitting down into the audience, or the audience showing their appreciation by spitting right back at them.
“There was something really great about that tour because other than maybe a few singles, the audience had never seen us.”
David Byrne said, “So there was a lot of curiosity and openness to us and Ramones, as different as we were.”
Bryne continued, “Somebody in the audience was gobbing on the bands and, of course, Ramones really didn’t like this.
