But the crisis confronting Australia is far graver than Ergas suggests. They have ceased believing that Western liberal democracy is something to defend. They accepted Australia’s institutions because they trusted those institutions to protect equal citizenship. The problem is that influential institutions have ceased defending the moral legitimacy of liberal democracy itself.
