Unassuming and iconic, The Pretzel Shop on Pittsburgh’s South Side makes thousands of pretzels five days a week in a massive hearth oven that’s capable of baking 200 pretzels in about seven minutes. Next year, The Pretzel Shop will celebrate 100 years of pretzel production. The veggie pizza pretzel ($2.75) is a twist on how to enjoy a pretzel in a different way. Rich Cupka, who grew up on the South Side, owns and operates Cupka’s Cafe 2, next door to The Pretzel Shop. On a recent visit her grandson downed two bacon, egg and cheese pretzel sandwiches.
