The Savannah Police Department has fired six employees following an internal investigation into the alleged misuse of the department’s Flock Safety automated license plate reader system. The Savannah Police Department launched its internal review after concerns emerged about searches conducted through the Flock Safety system. Investigators reviewing the Savannah department’s system activity examined approximately 39,000 searches. Savannah officials have indicated that the matter is being taken seriously and that the independent criminal investigation will be allowed to proceed. The six employees have already lost their positions with the Savannah Police Department following the internal investigation.
