Beach clean volunteers at Berrow made an unusual discovery during their latest session on Saturday (August 8th) when a decades‑old plastic lolly stick was found washed up along the high tideline.
The plastic stick, identified as a 1970s Lyons Maid superhero lolly stick, had survived more than fifty years in the sea without deteriorating.
Nigel Hoy from the group said it was “a very interesting find on Berrow Beach, and a clear example of how plastic doesn’t deteriorate over many years in the sea”.
He also thanked all those who joined the August beach clean, adding that a good turnout helped remove a significant amount of rubbish, some of which was potentially dangerous.
While most volunteers were working along the beach, Evie and her grandmother carried out a litter pick in the rhyne beside Berrow Coast Road.
