During the historic Miss Universe 1977 Parade of Nations, Janelle wore one of the most memorable, elaborate six-foot winged national costumes to date, called Spirit of Light. The iconic costume made a major impact on the Miss Universe pageant, marking a shift from the traditional folk dresses and garments most contestants wore. By showcasing a six-foot hummingbird made from sparkling iridescent silver silk, Janelle changed expectations for the National Costume presentation through cultural storytelling and inspired later Miss Universe entrants to create more expressive costumes. As Janelle approaches the 50th anniversary of her historic win next year, the Toronto Caribbean Carnival is preparing for its own 60th anniversary. With both milestones overlapping, it would be apropos for Janelle to be in Toronto to celebrate both historic firsts.
