It’s a harrowing deja vu for the Whitman County town of Malden. The site of a devastating fire on Labor Day in 2020, Malden on Saturday afternoon was advised to evacuate after a 2,000-acre fire north of town moved toward the communities of Malden and Pine City. There was also a separate fire of about 200 acres south of Colfax. Notification of the Malden-area fire, estimated at 200 acres and being driven by strong winds, was made about 4 p.m. Saturday.
